AUSTINTOWN - Joseph B. Chovan, Jr., 75, passed away unexpectedly at his home.

Joseph was born July 26, 1940, in Hubbard, a son of the late Joseph B. Chovan Sr. and Mary Lucas Chovan, and was a 1958 graduate of East High School.

After graduation, Joe joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for 20 years, retiring from the Air Force Reserves in 1980.

While in the Air Force, Joe attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Mississippi State University, and he graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelors degree in electrical engineering.

Upon his return to Youngstown, Joe worked as an electrical engineer for both Packard Electric and General Motors, and was a member of the International Union of Electricians. He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans and St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church.

A very kind and caring gentleman, Joe frequently donated to charities that benefitted the homeless. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and was a supporter of the Austintown Fraternal Order of Police.

Joe is survived by two daughters, Anastasia and Catherine Chovan, both of Seattle; and a sister, Mary Ann (Herb) Mancini of Youngstown.

His wife, Carole Ann Hnatiw Chovan whom he married May 17, 1969, died Sept. 9, 1996. A brother, Bill Chovan, is also deceased.

Family and friends gather from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 North Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.
