Patrick J. Scahill Obituary

AUSTINTOWN - On Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, Patrick J. “Pat” Scahill,72, surrounded by his loving family, peacefully and quietly entered heaven, passing from this earth at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital. Due to his exposure to Agent Orange while serving his country at the height of Vietnam War, Pat battled numerous, serious medical conditions throughout the years.

Pat was born June 20, 1949, and was a son of the late Joseph Scahill and Lois Byers Scahill. He was a graduate of East High School, and lived much of his life in this area.

After his military service in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he had a career at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, J&L Steel, and Youngstown Steel Door. Due to health issues that continued until Jesus called him home, he retired from work in 1996.

Pat was a remarkable man whose inner strength and quick wit would provide stability to his family, with many stories and laughs to be remembered. Once asked, "What is your purpose?" his response was "to be a good husband and father,” which extended then to his grandchildren and family members, and to take care of his family. This was an apt and accurate description of Pat's life. He fulfilled what was not only his passion, but his overall excellence as a man. He was insightful, dependable, steadfast, discerning, and true to himself and others.

He had God-endowed special endurance like no other, and continued to "press through" his health issues without much complaint, content to be with family and enjoy the simple things in life. Pat was both an avid Cleveland Browns and a die-hard Notre Dame Football fan, but what he loved most in life was spending time with family and his grandchildren. Whether it was attending baseball and football games, going to school plays, or just sitting on the couch, holding them and talking, Pat was always a family man and was admired for that special quality of his nature.

Pat belonged to Touch Heaven Ministries Canfield Church in Canfield.

He will always be remembered and forever loved by his wife of 48 years, Patricia “Patty” Sobieraj Scahill, whom he married July 18, 1973; his daughter, Traci (Tod) Pierce of Monroeville, Pa.; his son, Joseph (Kristen) Scahill of Austintown; his daughter, Carie Scahill of Austintown; grandchildren, Reagan and Grace Pierce, Peyton and Adalin Bova, and Kaedy Scahill; and brothers, Mike (Vicki) Scahill, Tim Scahill, and Brian Scahill. He will also be greatly missed by his sisters-in-law, Louise Martin, Tina Sobieraj, and Diane Terbovich, and their families; and his “furry kids,” Jack and Roxie.

Besides his parents, his mother-in-law, Theresa Mojica; a brother-in-law, David Mojica; as well as various extended family, preceded Pat in death.

Family and friends may call from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where services will follow at 2 p.m.

Committal will take place at a later date, and will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, in honor of Pat’s service to his country.

Pat’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Michael Roberts of the VA Medical Center in Warren, and to Nurse Michelle and the entire VA staff for the ongoing, compassionate, and excellent care provided to Pat throughout the years.
