Melvin Weimer Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN - Melvin Willard Weimer, 83, passed away Sunday afternoon, Nov. 21, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. He’s left this world and now joins his beloved wife, Nancy, in the next.

Melvin was born Aug.14, 1938, in Saltlick Township, Pa.,and was one of 12 children born to the late James A. Weimer and Myrtle Layman Weimer.

Melvin married his best friend, Nancy Lee Lytle Weimer, in Winchester, Va. on Jan. 24, 1959, and the couple was happily married for over 60 years, until her passing on May 18, 2019.

Melvin and Nancy grew up in the same area of Mt. Pleasant Pa., and they spend a majority of their time on their families’ farms until they decided to follow the American Dream by moving together to Youngstown in 1957. They liked that Youngstown was midway between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, and came to this area for the opportunities they saw.

Melvin began working at Industrial Steel when he arrived in Youngstown (later known as Exacta Cut Steel), while Nancy working at the Grist Mill in the Wedgewood Plaza.

After 43 years of employment, Melvin retired from the steel mill. During his retirement, Melvin and Nancy enjoyed bus trips, spending time with each other at various casinos and also with their family. They spent fun times together at Moose Lodge No. 627 in Niles, where he was a member; the Army & Navy Garrison No. 422; and at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3298 in Austintown, where he also was a member. Melvin also belonged to the Sons & Daughters of the Army & Navy Union in Girard.

He leaves his love for his family, and his lesson as to what true love was through the love he shared with his wife. Although he loved fishing and playing casino slots, his true love was Nancy, his lifelong love, and he dedicated his life to her. He was also devoted to his family and enjoyed his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren immensely.

Melvin leaves his daughter, Carolyn Murphy of Youngstown; his son, Larry (Donna) Weimer of North Jackson; five grandchildren, Matthew (Melissa) Murphy, Patricia Murphy, Larry (Danielle) Weimer,  Frank (Megan) Weimer, and Brittany Weimer; eight great-grandchildren, Austin, Christian, Matthew Jr., Mikaylah, Sophia, Keith Jr., Frank, and Parker; and a sister, Theresa “Patsy” (Wendell) Knopsnider.

Melvin will be deeply missed and will be remembered for his love for his family and his dedication to achieving the American Dream in the Steel Belt of Youngstown.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by 10 siblings and their spouses, Harold (Mabel), Domer (Rita), Ronald, Gerald (Eris), Virginia (John), Terry “Woody,” Ruby (Joe) Miller, Homer Dean, Judy Ann (Ben) Johnson, and Elmer.

There are no calling hours. Melvin’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life Ceremony at a later date.

He will be laid to rest at Hillview Cemetery in Normalville, Pa. in Fayette County, alongside his beloved Nancy.
