Hannelore J. Thomas
September 5, 1930 ~ February 8, 2024 (age 93) 93 Years Old
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP - Hannelore J. Thomas, 93, passed away peacefully, Thursday morning, February 8, 2024, in the comfort of her home.
Hannelore was born September 5, 1930, in Germany, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Fildebrandt and journeyed to America, settling in Youngstown in 1953. Hannelore also served her country with pride, contributing her talents as a civilian in the U.S. Military in Germany.
She had a thirst for knowledge which led her to earn two Bachelor of Science Degrees from Youngstown State University. She worked at Youngstown State University for many years and also worked as a substitute teacher in the Youngstown City School District and as a self-employed nanny. Hannelore's commitment to nurturing the next generation was evident in every interaction, as she selflessly poured her heart and soul into shaping young minds and hearts. Beyond her professional endeavors, Hannelore's love for children extended to her own family, where she found immeasurable joy in caring for her loved ones.
Hannelore's steadfast belief in God was evident in every aspect of her life, serving as the cornerstone of her existence. In her younger days, she spent a transformative year in the convent following her high school graduation in Germany. A dedicated member of St. Columba Cathedral, she found solace and strength in her spiritual community, where she nurtured her relationship with the Lord through prayer, worship, and fellowship.
Beyond her professional and spiritual pursuits, Hannelore found joy in life's simple pleasures. She had a passion for music and enjoyed playing the piano. She also enjoyed watching slow-pitch softball and attending Mahoning Valley Scrappers baseball games and Youngstown State University football games. She also enjoyed gardening and found solace and contentment in nurturing her plants. However, her greatest joy came from caring for her family, whose well-being was always her top priority.
Hannelore is survived by her three sons, Robert E. Thomas of Liberty Township, Edward D. Thomas of Liberty Township and Paul H. Thomas (Tina Cifani) of Brunswick, OH; her daughter, Susan A. (Keith) Langfeldt of Deer Park, WISC; four grandchildren, Karen, Robin, Lisa and Laurie and a stepbrother, Herbert Fildebrandt of Germany.
Her husband of 58 years, John A. Thomas, whom she married in May 1950, died in December 2008.
Family and friends may gather to pay respects from 9 to 9:50 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at St. Columba Cathedral 159 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow at Tod Homestead Cemetery where Hannelore will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.
