Obituary

AUSTINTOWN - Steve R. Serenko, 87, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, Dec. 23, 2015, at Victoria House Assisted Living.

Steve was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Youngstown, a son of the late John J. and Anna Slavkovsky Serenko, and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a graduate of Chaney High School and spent several of his post high school years working in the shipping department at the Isaly Dairy Company. In 1952, he began work as a bricklayer for Youngstown Sheet & Tube (later LTV Steel) and worked there for 28 years until the facility closed in 1980.

Along with his older brother, John, he formed the J & S Construction Company. John, a carpenter and builder by trade, built over 50 homes in the Youngstown area, with Steve laying the brick.

Steve was an active charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Austintown, volunteering for activities ranging from school bus driver in the early days of the parish to laying the brickwork in several sections around the parish complex. He was also a member of the parish senior citizens group and was a 3rd degree life member of the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Mears Council No. 3990.

Steve leaves to cherish his memory a younger brother, Thomas (Ann Soltis) Serenko; his longtime friend and companion, Alice Snyder of Poland; and 14 beloved nieces and nephews.

In the past 18 months, three of Steve's siblings have preceded him in death, Catherine Dulick of Austintown, Mary Oakley of Cleveland, and John Serenko of Austintown.

Family and friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 27, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Funeral Services will begin at 9:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 28, at the funeral home, and will continue at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Norquest Boulevard.

A committal service will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, where Steve will be laid to rest next to his brother and sister-in-law, John and Ella Mae Serenko.
