YOUNGSTOWN - Stephen J. Nyers Jr., 82, of the city’s west side, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Friday morning, May 15, 2026, in the comfort of his home.
Stephen was born Feb. 3, 1944, in Columbia, Mississippi, a son of the late Stephen J. Nyers and Eloise Holland Nyers, and came to the Youngstown area as a child.
He was a 1962 graduate of Chaney High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force as a sergeant from 1964 to 1968.
During his high school years, Steve worked part time doing odd jobs at Stambaugh School. He later worked at Aeroquip, U.S. Steel Ohio Works and McDonald Steel, from where he retired in the early 2000s.
Steve was a member and councilman at the former Our Lady of Hungary Church. He enjoyed gardening, tending to his tropical fish and was a proud hot rod enthusiast who loved working on cars and talking shop with fellow car lovers. An avid outdoorsman, Steve enjoyed trout fishing, panning for gold and simply spending time outside. He was a member of the New Middletown Farmers and Sportsmen Club and was well known as a “meticulous” vendor at the Four Seasons Flea Market. Most of all, Steve treasured the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy.
Steve leaves to forever cherish his memory his wife of nearly 60 years, Lois E. Cardelein Nyers, whom he married July 30, 1966; his son, Stephen L. (Kelli) Nyers of Columbiana; his daughter, Wendy E. (Todd) Potts of Boardman; four grandchildren, Alexander Nyers, Mary Alice Nyers, Lauren Potts and Gavin Potts; six siblings, Michael Nyers of Struthers, John (Beth) Nyers of Canfield, James (Brenda) Nyers of Ashtabula, Carol McCahan of Kinsman, Debra Stewart of Cortland and Terri (Dave) Collinsworth of Georgia; his beloved granddogs, Benny, Georgie, Echidna, Typhon, Aria and Lylith; and many extended family members and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Gillian; and two brothers-in-law, Jim Stewart and Jerry McCahan.
Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon, Friday, May 22, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where a funeral service will be held at noon.
Interment will follow at Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Austintown.
