GIRARD — Robert Sanders, 93, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Sept. 13, 2025, at Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert, known to many as "Bob," was born Jan. 19, 1932 in Youngstown, a son of the late Joseph Michael and Mary Rose Tokar Sanders, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a 1951 graduate of North High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his service, Bob attended Youngstown State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education.
Teaching and mentoring were not just a profession, but a passion for Bob. He spent the majority of his career as a dedicated teacher at Girard High School, where he inspired countless students both in the classroom and on the athletic field.
After retiring from teaching, he continued to coach Girard's cross country and track and field teams for many years. Bob also officiated Special Olympics track meets at the state and local levels, giving his time and energy to ensure every athlete had a chance to shine.
Bob was an active member of his community and was involved in a number of organizations, including the Mahoning Valley Track Association, Trumbull County Retired Teachers, and Curbstone Coaches.
A man of strong faith, Bob was a devoted member of St. Rose Church in Girard. He served faithfully as a funeral server and with the offering ministry, always willing to lend a hand where it was needed.
Bob's greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his daughter, Joanna (Michael) Neary; his grandson, Simon Neary; and his sister, Marge Chiricosta. His wife of 23 years, Mary Ann Zaubi Sanders, whom he married July 28, 1978, passed away Dec. 3, 2001. Bob was also preceded in death by nine siblings.
