Obituary

[Calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m., THURSDAY, 9/17, at Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.]

YOUNGSTOWN - Mary L. West, 95, of the city's west side, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Mary was born Nov. 7, 1919, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Havrila, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a homemaker who also worked for many years as a designer for Briel's Florist in Youngstown.

Mary was an active member of St. Brendan Church in Youngstown, where she took part in many various church projects. She was a member of St. George Croatian Lodge No. 66, and was a member of the St. Mary Golden Pillars and of the St. Christine Parish Senior Citizens.

A stylish woman, Mary was very particular about her appearance, and always dressed well and had her hair styled. She enjoyed bus trips, and loved playing cards, especially poker and a "good game" of 500 bid. She was known for her "green thumb" and always had an exceptional flower and vegetable garden. Mary was also an excellent cook and baker, and her reputation for her kolachi and her "fall-apart" roast beef was second to none.

Most of all, Mary loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be truly and sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Mary leaves her daughter, Judith "Judy" (Richard) Bennett of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Jim (Elizabeth) Getz of Liberty Township, Tina (Bill) Bisker of Austintown, and Fred Bennett of Las Vegas; four great-grandchildren, Billy Bisker, Lewis Bisker, Justin Getz, and Lauren Getz; and three brothers, Frank Havrila of Youngstown, Edward Havrila of Florida, and John (Peggy) Havrila of Pittsburgh.

Her first husband, John Stokan, whom she married in 1940, passed away in 1964. Her second husband, Robert C. West, whom she married in 1967, passed away Jan. 26, 1991. A son, Ronald Stokan, three sisters, Betty Pack, Helen Koken, and Frances Luchansky, and a brother, Michael Havrila, are also deceased.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., THURSDAY, Sept. 17, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. on FRIDAY (9/18) at the funeral home, and will continue at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Ave., Youngstown.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

Mary's family thanks the staff and nurses at St. Elizabeth Health Center's CVIC unit for the kindness shown and care given to Mary during her stay there.
