CANFIELD — Martin Anthony Conti, 84, formerly of Youngstown's West Side, passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 9, 2025, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family.

Affectionately known as "Chief," Marty was born June 12, 1941, in Youngstown, a son of the late Dominic and Theresa Nardella Conti, and was a lifelong area resident. He grew up on Imperial St. and South Schenley Ave. He attended Chaney High School, graduating in 1959.

After high school, Marty served his country by enlisting in the Ohio Army National Guard. He later worked in various jobs, including as an ambulance driver for the city of Youngstown, a civil engineering and surveying assistant for Bill Engelhardt, and alongside his cousin, City Engineer Richard Marsico.

In 1966, Marty began his career as a firefighter with the city of Youngstown, retiring in November 1994 as a battalion chief after 33 years of service. He bravely fought many fires during his career, including the Idora Park fire in 1984, and he often shared stories about the blazes he battled and the brotherhood of firefighters he was proud to be part of. Marty was also a proud member of Firefighters Union Local 312.

Marty earned his Ohio real estate license and worked for Century 21 Brighton Realty with Kathy Miller. He later became a certified real estate appraiser with Anthony Thomas Associates before establishing his own business, Conti Appraisal Services.

On March 7, 1970, Marty married the love of his life, the former Anna Jean Pennel, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and devotion.

He enjoyed gardening and especially loved growing vegetables, a craft he learned from his grandfather and father. Throughout his life, Marty wore many hats and held many titles, but the ones he cherished most were husband, father, and above all, grandfather. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye, and "Papa" never missed an opportunity to tell them how proud he was of their accomplishments.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 55 years, Jeanie; his four children, Michele (Dr. Adrian) Ieraci, Deana (Michael) Nelson, Dr. Danielle (Dr. Brian) Schuler, and Dr. Dominic (Renee) Conti; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Meghan) and Marissa Ieraci, Jamie Nelson, Emily (Jaden), Ethan, and Andrew Schuler, and Stephen and Ryan Conti; and his niece, Helen Beshara. He also leaves his beloved grand-dogs, Daisy and Lynnie.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary Louise Beshara; his infant brother, Richard; and his nephew, Edward Richard Beshara.

Family and friends may gather to pay respects from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Avenue, Youngstown, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m.

A committal service with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or to Hospice of the Valley.

The Conti family extends heartfelt gratitude to Marty's physicians, nurses, and caregivers for their kindness and compassion during his illness.

Marty's legacy of love, service, and devotion to family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
