Obituary

AUSTINTOWN - Martha M. Seruga, 101, formerly of Wesley Avenue on Youngstown's west side, passed away peacefully early Wednesday evening, Dec. 23, 2015, at Austinwoods Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, after a long and fulfilling life.

Martha was born Aug. 27, 1914, in Star Junction, Pa., a daughter of the late Emery and Julia Gabor Pato, and came to this area in 1955.

She was a homemaker who also worked as a factory worker in Connellsville, Pa., and then at the Hatway Hat Shop in downtown Youngstown.

Martha was a loyal member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Holy Name of Jesus Church in Youngstown, and attended services until her health prevented her from going to church. She then regularly attended Mass and rosary services at Sterling House, where she resided for three years, and then at Austinwoods for the past year.

Mrs. Seruga's passion was crocheting. She loved to make scarves, especially for her family. She also loved to play bingo, and loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all of her heart.

Martha will be deeply missed by her family, and leaves her loving daughter, Estella (Raymond) Jursa of Austintown; five grandchildren, Jeffrey (Shannan) Jursa of Austintown, Karen (Spencer) Twyford of Columbus, Brian (Deanna) Seruga of Austintown, Sherrie Seruga (Ralph Appugliese) of Austintown, and Christine Seruga of Austintown; 13 great-grandchildren, Noah and Drew Jursa, Evan Shobel, Morgan and Madison Twyford, Stacie (Matthew) Sweely, Jessica Seruga, Alyssa Seruga, Vincent Appugliese, Mia and Nathan Seruga, and Brandon and Amie Marshall; a great-great-granddaughter, Tara Sweely; and a daughter-in-law, Arlene Seruga of Youngstown.

Her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, Stanley F. Seruga, whom she married April 1, 1935, passed away Feb. 26, 1995. A son, Robert S. Seruga, passed away Dec. 4, 1999. Two brothers, Emery J. and William Pato; and a sister, Irene Zedek, are also deceased.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home, and will continue at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 613 N. Lakeview Ave, Youngstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where Martha will be laid to rest next to her husband, Stanley.

Martha's family thanks the staff at Austinwoods and the staff with Crossroads Hospice, for the kindness shown and the round-the-clock care given to Martha.
