MCDONALD — Lawrence S. Kurilla, 84, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, March 26, 2026, at Hospice House, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
Lawrence was born Sept. 7, 1941, in Smock, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Stephen A. and Johanna B. Klena Kurilla, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a 1959 graduate of Chaney High School and began his career at Youngstown Machine and Foundry, where he completed his machinist apprenticeship. Larry went on to dedicate more than 30 years to Commercial Shearing, which later became Commercial Intertech, where he was known for his strong work ethic and deep devotion to his family.
Larry was a member of Queen of Heaven Parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and was a man of strong and abiding faith. He was active in numerous Bible study and prayer groups and could often be found attending Mass not only at his home parish, but also at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles and at the Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted in Youngstown. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4658 in McDonald, where he attained the rank of Third Degree.
Larry found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed playing golf, woodworking and tinkering around the house, always keeping busy with a project. In his younger years, he had a passion for cars and remained a lifelong sports enthusiast. Nothing brought him greater happiness, however, than supporting his family — especially attending the sporting events and activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If schedules overlapped, Larry made it a point to divide his time so he could be present for each of them, a reflection of his unwavering love and devotion.
Larry leaves to forever cherish his memory his son, Thomas L. Kurilla of East Palestine; his three grandchildren, Hanna (Niall) McGee of Cortland, Stephen (Emily) Kurilla of Salem and Katelyn Kurilla of Nashville; his five great-grandchildren, Hunter, Sadie and Ellie Kurilla, and Mia and James McGee; his sister, Paula (Don) Hann of Arizona; and many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.
His wife of 64 years, Arlene G. Neff Kurilla, whom he married Aug. 12, 1961, passed away Aug. 2, 2025. His daughter, Colleen Kurilla, passed away March 29, 2025. Two sisters, Marlene Perry and Joan Kurilla, also preceded Larry in death.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 618 Ohio Ave., McDonald. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church.
Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, where Larry will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife and daughter
