Obituary

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved uncle, Joseph Zemko Jr.

On Oct. 23, 2025, Joe met his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, when he was called to his heavenly home at the age of 96.

Joe was born Jan. 24, 1929, in Youngstown, a son of the late Joseph and Philomena Kuzmensky Zemko.

He was a proud graduate of Chaney High School, Class of 1948, and a proud U.S. veteran, serving four years in the Navy during the Korean War. During his service, Joe was stationed aboard four naval ships and took great pride in his time defending his country.

After returning home, he worked for the Department of Defense at the Youngstown Reserve Base, where he was employed until his retirement in March 1984. In 1987, Joe moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., where he made his home for the past several decades.

Joe was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Youngstown.

He leaves behind his wife, Thelma Perone Zemko, whom he married Oct. 8, 1955; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Emma Nichols, a dear friend for more than 25 years, for her kindness and support.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, John Zemko; and sisters, Ann Gill, Mary Katchmer, Rose Rappach and Kay Lasko.

Per Joe's request, private services were held at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Cemetery in Youngstown, with Father Mykola Zomchak officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 1025 N. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown, OH 44509.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.
