John T. Trella Sr.

YOUNGSTOWN - John T. Trella, 93, of the city’s west side, passed away peacefully, Friday, Dec. 26, 2025, at Hospice House, with his family by his side.

John was born Jan. 19, 1932, in Youngstown, a son of the late Mike and Mary Elko Trella, and was a lifelong area resident.

A graduate of Chaney High School, John proudly served in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he worked for the East Ohio Gas Company for over 30 years, where he was known as a hardworking, reliable presence until his retirement.

John was a devoted member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown. He gave generously of his time, volunteering at the weekly parish bingo and as a member of the Golden Pillars. His faith and his church community were an important part of his daily life.

He enjoyed golfing and was a proud member of the St. Mary’s Men’s Golf League. More than anything, though, John cherished time with his family. He adored his grandchildren and loved attending their sporting events, school programs, and the many activities that brought them joy. His gentle support, warm smile, and steady presence will be forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.

John is survived by his two sons, John “Jack” (Kathy) Trella of Youngstown and Michael (Maggie) Trella of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Jacob Trella, Kara (Kody) Harmon and Christian Trella; and many extended family members.

His wife of 60 years, Angeline Sassano Trella, whom he married Feb. 19, 1955, died March 1, 2015. John was also preceded in death by his siblings, Michael Trella, Paul "Pie" Trella, Margaret Bush, and infant Andrew Trella; and Anne Leson, who was like a sister to John.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home and continue with a Funeral Liturgy at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 346 S. Belle Vista Avenue in Youngstown.

A committal service with military honors will follow at St. Mary Parish Cemetery where John will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Angeline.

In lieu of flowers, John’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley.
