POLAND - John E. Stanchin, 85, formerly of Fifth Street in Struthers, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Dec. 8, 2025, at Poland Village Assisted Living, following a courageous battle with dementia.
John was born Jan. 4, 1940, in Youngstown, a son of the late Emery and Kay Stanchin, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a 1958 graduate of Wilson High School and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and the Navy. He was also a member of the Naval Reserves Seabees.
John worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Brier Hill Works as a lineman until the mills closed in the late 1970s. After his forced retirement, he continued working in the electrical field, holding various jobs throughout the area.
He enjoyed tinkering in his garage, collecting clocks, and hunting with his brother in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He especially loved fishing and teaching all four of his grandchildren how to fish. Above all, John cherished the time he spent with his family and friends at Holiday Camplands in Andover.
John leaves to forever cherish his memory his son, John W. (Mary Lou) Stanchin of Boardman; four grandchildren, DJ (Ashley) Fox, Kacie Fox, John W. (Julianna) Stanchin Jr. and Brian (Harley) Stanchin; his great-grandson, Ricky; his sister-in-law, Sue Stanchin of Louisville; and many extended family members.
His wife of 50 years, Judith Askin Stanchin, whom he married June 17, 1961, died Dec. 26, 2011.
John was also preceded in death by his daughter, Carrie Fox, and his brother, Emery J. Stanchin.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.
Family and friends may also gather to pay respects from 10 to 11 a.m.. Friday, Dec. 12, at the funeral home, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.
A committal service with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where John will be laid to rest beside his beloved Judy.
In lieu of flowers, John’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Mahoning District, P.O. Box 224, Youngstown, OH 44501.
