Obituary

CANFIELD - James Allen Stevens, 85, passed away peacefully Monday, February 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

James, who was affectionately known as "Al" or "Big Al" was born November 22, 1938, a son of the late Edward Stevens and Eunice Dailey Stevens and was a lifelong area resident.

Big Al was a  graduate of Springfield Local High School where he distinguished himself as a multi-sport athlete and team captain. His prowess extended across football, basketball, and track and field, where he excelled as a pole vaulter, hurdler, and miler. Notably, he clinched the title of Ohio Track and Field State Champion in the pole vault, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career. Continuing his journey, he pursued higher education at The Ohio State University on a track and field scholarship, earning recognition as a three-time letterman. Al then served in the United States Army as a medical specialist and sharpshooter.

Al worked as an operating engineer for over 40 years. Al's mentorship was as diverse as his interests. Whether teaching the art of fishing, imparting wisdom on landscaping and gardening, or sharing his passion for all sports, he had a knack for inspiring others to pursue their passions with enthusiasm. His love for nature, particularly dogs and birds, was infectious, fostering a deep appreciation for the world around him. His willingness to share his knowledge and skills extended to hosting Boy Scout troops on his home property, where he patiently taught them the intricate process of making maple syrup, leaving a lasting impact on each young scout.

Al was a member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown. Beyond his hobbies, Al found solace in the simple pleasures of life, enjoying the timeless allure of Western films and passionately cheering on Cleveland sports teams and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Al is survived by his wife of 58 years, the love of his life, Ann Panko Stevens; his three children, James (Amy) Stevens, Jr., Nicole (Matt) Peters, and Mark Stevens; his four siblings, Edward Stevens Jr., Joann Parks, Lois (Craig) Moore, and Michael Stevens and several nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Al will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Besides his parents, a sister, Marilyn Kopchak preceded Al in death.
