Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN - James S. Balog Sr., 83, of the city's Cornersburg area, passed away Saturday morning, July 30, 2016, at Austinwoods Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Austintown, following a lengthy illness.

James was born in Youngstown on Feb. 6, 1933, a son of the late Louis and Susan Banyai Balog, and was a lifelong area resident.

He attended Chaney High School and worked for the Goodyear Tire Company and the Lee Tire Company, both in Youngstown, retiring in 1995.

Jim was a member of the former Our Lady of Hungary Church in Youngstown. He enjoyed fishing with his six sons, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Balog leaves his wife of 64 years, Dorothy J. Hoffman Balog, whom he married March 1, 1952, in Our Lady of Hungary Church; a daughter, Karen (Tony) Knapp of Sarasota, Fla.; sons, James S. Jr. (Susan) Balog of Alaska, Frank (Joanie) Balog of Struthers, Nicky (Rose) Balog of North Lima, Charles Balog of Youngstown, Dan (Sandi) Balog of Youngstown, and Randy Balog of Youngstown; 43 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward (Sandy) Balog of Salem; a sister, Betty Gill of Youngstown; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margie, Judy Soltis, and Helen Drahuschak; and by a brother, Louis Balog Jr.

Private services were held Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Arrangements were entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Jim's family thanks Crossroads Hospice for the kindness shown and care given to Mr. Balog during his illness.
