NORTHFIELD - Irene Zapotocky, 97, formerly of Sheridan Road in Youngstown, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021, at her home at Northfield Village, with her family by her side.

Irene was born April 15, 1924, in Ukraine, and was the daughter of Simeon and Horpina Finagaeva.

Mrs. Zapotocky was a homemaker and loved to cook. Her meals created many wonderful memories for her family and friends. She also had a passion for gardening, and was skilled in canning what she grew. Each year, from spring through fall, her home was surrounded with beautiful flowers. Marigolds were her favorite.

Irene was a devout and active member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown, where she was a tireless volunteer for the parish's pyrohy, paska, and kolachi fundraisers.

Her beloved husband of 55 years, Jerry Zapotocky, whom she married in 1945, passed away Nov. 4, 2000.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Mary (Jeff) Long of Muncie, Ind.; three sons, Zenek Zapotocky of Doylestown, Peter (Lori) Zapotocky of Westminster, Colo., and George (Lisa) Zapotocky of Mentor; six grandchildren, Lisa Bates, Gina Kalain, Christopher and Mathew Zapotocky, George Long and Rebecca Hill; nine great-grandchildren, Cara Long, Tyrian Hill, Caroline and Jacqueline Kalain, Taylor Allen, and Tyler, Austin, Bailey, and Logan Bates; and four great-great-grandchildren, Paisley Bates, and Addison, Kinsley, and Lincoln Allen.

Besides her husband, a great-granddaughter, Victoria Long, is deceased.

Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 1, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Due to the ongoing pandemic, all attending are asked to wear appropriate masks or face coverings, and to respect social distancing guidelines.

A procession to Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown will follow the funeral home services, where Irene will be laid to rest next to her husband, Jerry.
