YOUNGSTOWN - Irene F. Fillers, 96, peacefully entered heaven, on Friday August 9, 2024.
Irene was born January 16, 1928, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Edward Gossick Sr., and Stella Gossick, and was a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley. She attended East High School, graduating in 1946.
Irene was proud to have been a non-traditional student at Youngstown University while raising her children. She graduated with honors, earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees in education. Her passion for education and helping others came naturally to her. She was employed by and retired from the Youngstown City School District as a special education teacher. During her teaching career, she was honored with multiple awards from the district and the Ohio Department of Education.
Irene was an avid shopper who always surprised her family with special gifts. She enjoyed visiting casinos around the country, was an animal lover, an avid baker, and loved cooking for and spending time with her family. She was well-traveled and appreciated all cultures. Irene was extremely social and belonged to many organizations, including the Youngstown French Club, Rotary Club, Catholic Social Club, and others. She loved music and was an annual ticket holder to the Youngstown Symphony. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she was strong in her Catholic faith.
Irene leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Dale and Brian; her daughter, Doreen McCall (Steve) ; three step-grandchildren, Nicole (Andrew), Ray (Jenna) and Allison and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, her sister, Dolores, her two brothers, Edward Jr., and Raymond and an infant daughter preceded Irene in death.
The family would like to humbly thank the amazing and wonderful staff at Shepherd of the Valley Howland for the loving care Irene received during her time there. They would also like to thank Traditions Hospice for their kindness, loving support and care.
