CANFIELD - Helen G. Kubic, 80, formerly of Youngstown's west side, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 21, 2018, at Hospice House in Beaver Township.

Helen was born Aug. 31, 1937, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Philip and Mary Johnson Kotmair, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1955 graduate of The Rayen School and worked for five years for Ohio Bell before becoming a homemaker. Mrs. Kubic then attended Youngstown State University, where she earned both a bachelor and masters degree in education, becoming a teacher with the Youngstown City Schools. Helen started out by doing student teaching at Kirkmere, then taught at Kirkmere, West Elementary, and Harding. She was a substitute teacher at Stambaugh, and later retired from West Elementary.

Helen was a member of the historic St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Youngstown, a member of the Miriam Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the St. George Croatian Lodge, No. 66, CFU. She was also a member of the Teacher's Retirement Club, and enjoyed arts & crafts. Helen leaves a son, Edward W. Kubic, Jr., D.D.S. (wife, Karen) of Cortland; two daughters, Laura Ann Kubic Summer of Canfield and Cynthia Lynn Kubic (James) Bassett of Canfield; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several extended family members, including cousins, Jean and Reid Painter of Niles.

Helen's husband, Edward W. Kubic, Sr., whom she married Oct. 26, 1957, passed away Oct. 2, 2007. A brother, Edward Kotmair, and a sister, Marian Spiegel, also preceded Helen in death.

Private calling hours and funeral services were held on Feb. 26 at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown. Interment took place at Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Austintown.
