Frank Schauer

YOUNGSTOWN – Ference “Frank” Schauer, 89, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026.

Frank was born June 1, 1937, in Gyarmat, Hungary, one of eight children. Following the anti-communist Hungarian Revolution of 1956, Frank escaped Hungary and eventually made his way to the United States. His sister, Anna, also left Hungary and eventually settled in New Jersey.

Frank proudly served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962 as a communications specialist. His time in communications sparked an interest in radio that later led him to host and engineer the “Ethnic Music Hour” on WKTL Radio in Struthers.

Over the years, Frank built a life centered on family, faith, service and community. He was a longtime member of St. Stephen of Hungary Church, where he and his family worshipped until the church closed in 2023. Frank served as president of the church’s Holy Name Society for many years and trained altar servers. A talented and dependable handyman, he also took care of many repairs and projects around the church whenever needed.

Frank was active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as commissioner of the Columbiana County council. He accompanied the scouts on camping trips, and he and his family hosted many scouting activities at their property, including hayrides and picnics. Frank also hosted hayrides for various youth groups, including those from local churches.

Proud of his Hungarian heritage, Frank was well known for his involvement in the Hungarian community in the Youngstown area. He was active with the William Penn Association, where he served as branch president, and served as president of the American Hungarian Federation for more than 25 years.

Frank was known for always having the right tool for the job and was the handy guy everyone wanted around when something needed fixed. His motto was, “Do it right the first time!” He loved being involved, if only to make sure things got done the right way.

Above all, Frank was the patriarch of a large and happy family. He leaves his wife of 61 years, Maria Aczél Schauer; four sons, Frank Jr. (Elizabeth) Schauer, Miklós (Nicholle) Schauer, John Randall (Carol) Schauer and James (Jenniffer) Schauer; 11 grandchildren, Rachel, Samantha, Jeremiah, Alyssa, Travis, Bryce, Owen, Austin, Aiden, Jordan and the late Nathan Jones; three great-grandchildren, Weston, Everson and Walker; his sister, Anna (Steve) of New Jersey; and three siblings in Hungary.

He will be greatly missed, especially the next time something breaks.

Family and friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where funeral services will begin at 11 a.m.

Committal services will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
