YOUNGSTOWN - Donald H. Scherl, 90, formerly of the city's west side, passed away late Friday afternoon, Sept. 7, 2018, following a long and active life.
Donald was born June 2, 1928, in Youngstown, a son of the late Henry and Alice Fitch Scherl, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a 1946 graduate of Chaney High School and attended Youngstown College. Don worked for 40 years for the Schwebel Baking Company, retiring in 1990 from the sales department. Mr. Scherl also served his country in the National Guard.
Don was an active member of St. Brendan Church in Youngstown, where he served as head usher in the church for over 50 years. He had also been a member of the parish council, was a bingo and festival worker, and was a senior altar server. Don belonged to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and volunteered at its food pantry until he was 85 years old.
Don leaves two daughters, Donna Lynn Binder of Liberty Township and Barbara Ann (Richard) DelBene of Cranberry Township, Pa.; three grandchildren, Dr. Melissa Binder of S. Carolina, Gregory (Laura) DelBene of N. Carolina, and Lindsey (Danny) Meyer of Hudson; five great-grandchildren, Erin, Jackson, Lucas, Joseph, and Leah; and several nieces and nephews, including Lauren (Richard) McCarthy, who was very special to him
Don's wife of 54 years, Ruth Kubic Scherl, whom he married Jan. 21, 1950, passed away March 5, 2004. A brother, Robert Scherl, and Robert's wife, Roena, are also deceased.
Family and friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 10:30 to noon, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd, Youngstown.
Funeral services will begin at noon, Tuesday, at the funeral home, and will continue at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Ave., Youngstown, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m.
Committal services will follow the Mass, and will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where Don will be laid to rest next to his wife, Ruth.
Don's family thanks the staff with Liberty Arms Assisted Living, where Mr. Scherl had been a resident for the past 4-and-a-half years, with special thanks to Sheila, Cindy, Fred, and Chris. His family also thanks Dr. Aron Blecher and his staff, and Crossroads Hospice, for the kindness shown and care given to Don and his family.
Memorial contributions may be made in Don's name to the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, 317 Via Mt. Carmel Ave., Youngstown, OH 44505.
