AUSTINTOWN — Caroline S. Tusin, 97, passed away peacefully Friday, April 24, 2026, at Woodlands at Austinwoods, surrounded by the care and comfort of those who loved her, following a long, meaningful, and well-lived life.
Caroline was born February 9, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Stephen and Katherine (Lucic) Makar, and was a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley.
A proud 1946 graduate of Girard High School, Caroline went on to further her education at Youngstown State University, where she earned her bachelor of science degree in education. She dedicated many years to shaping young minds, beginning her career at St. Rose School and later teaching at Adams Middle School, where she faithfully served her students for 25 years before retiring in 1999. Her patience, kindness, and steady presence left a lasting impression on generations of students.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures — a round of golf, long car rides with her beloved husband, evenings spent dancing and trying her luck at the casino. She was also a wonderful cook who took great pride in preparing meals for her family. She enjoyed the arts and appeared in several plays at the Youngstown Playhouse. During her children’s younger years, she gave her time as a Girl Scout troop leader, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Above all, Caroline cherished time spent with her family, who were the true center of her world.
Caroline leaves to forever cherish her memory her four children, William (Jeanette) Tusin, Kathy Tusin-Mell, Eileen (Joe) Catanzaro, and Michael (Linda) Tusin; her seven grandchildren, William “Scott” Tusin, William “BJ” Tusin III, Victoria Hays, Laura Holt, Joseph Catanzaro Jr., Michael Tusin Jr., and Brian Tusin; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Barbara Dunlap; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Her husband of 60 years, William Tusin Sr., whom she married June 26, 1947, passed away November 22, 2007. Also preceding Caroline in death were her sister, Rose Missick; her brother, George Makar; her great-grandson, Andrew Tusin; and her daughter-in-law, Barbara Tusin.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of the 700 unit at Austinwoods for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Caroline. Their dedication and genuine affection meant so much to her and to her family.
Family and friends may call from 11:30 to 12:30 Friday, May 1, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where a funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m.
Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown where Caroline will be laid to rest beside her husband.
