AUSTINTOWN – Virginia Rockney, 94, passed away Saturday morning, Sept. 15, 2018, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, surrounded by her family.
Virginia was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Rydzon Klutch, and came to the Youngstown area as a child with her family.
Mrs. Rockney was a Wilson High School graduate and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown College. She was a teacher for 30 years, and taught at St. Christine School, for the Youngstown City Schools, and she retired from Kirkmere School.
She was a member of St. Christine Church in Youngstown. Virginia was also a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association in Mahoning and Trumbull County.
She loved to travel and visited many places throughout her lifetime, including Alaska and the Bahamas. Most recently, Virginia traveled on a Mississippi riverboat cruise at the age of 90. She also swam at the Ursuline Motherhouse, where she met many interesting and wonderful people.
Virginia’s husband of 62 years, Steve Rockney, whom she married May 6, 1946, passed away Nov. 15, 2008.
Mrs. Rockney leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Wendy Rockney of Austintown; a grandson, John Justin Rockney of Austintown; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Paige and Rylie Renee Galterio; a sister, Norma Pecchio of Austintown; two nephews, Joe Pecchio of Austintown and Gary Pecchio of Georgia; and a niece, Joyce Pecchio of Florida.
Besides her husband, a daughter, Cheryl Rockney and a sister, Maxine Bielak, are deceased.
Family and friends may gather from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 24, at St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown, where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
Committal services will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where Virginia will be laid to rest next to her husband.
