AUSTINTOWN – Martha Anne Vasko Laurie, 82, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 23, 2018, at her son’s home with her family by her side.
Martha was born July 18, 1936, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Julius and Lillian Zadonia Vasko, and spent her life in this area.
She was a 1954 graduate of The Rayen School, and graduated from the Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Warren in 1957. Later, Martha earned a bachelor’s degree in Allied Health from Hiram College in 1996.
A registered nurse, Mrs. Laurie spent much of her nursing career at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. She became Assistant Director of Critical Care and subsequently advanced to Director of Critical Care, holding that position until she retired in 2000. Martha returned to TMH in 2002 and worked part time as a Nursing Supervisor, until 2006.
Martha was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Austintown. She was a member of the TMH School of Nursing Alumni Committee, an active member and former trustee of the TMH Retirement Club, and she was a member of the Retired RN Interest Group of Youngstown. She loved to scrapbook and care for her sons’ dogs.
Martha leaves two sons, David (Marie) Laurie of Austintown and Mark Laurie (Christy Lillie) of Austintown; a granddaughter, Amanda (Sean) Packo of Mineral Ridge; a grandson, David Joseph “DJ” Laurie of Austintown; a great-grandson, Asher Michael Packo; and a sister-in-law, Connie Laurie of Liberty Township.
Her husband of 31 years, Andrew J. “Bucky” Laurie, whom she married Oct. 10, 1959, passed away Feb. 23, 1991. A brother, Paul T. Vasko, and a sister, Mary M. Pittock, also preceded her in death.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m.,Thursday, Oct. 25, at Kinnick Funeral Home 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 26, at the funeral home, and will continue at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Committal services will follow the Mass and will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, where Martha will be laid to rest next to her husband.
