GIRARD - Leo G. Bakes, 77, passed away Wednesday morning, March 13, 2019, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital following a brief illness with his family by his side.
Leo was born Nov. 12, 1941, in Youngstown, a son of the late Andy and Mary Bakes, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a graduate of Wilson High School in Youngstown and worked at Quality Auto Body for several years. Leo also worked as a maintenance supervisor for Liberty Township, retiring in 2002.
Mr. Bakes was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard.
Leo loved repairing and restoring cars, and was a “jack of all trades,” helping many friends and family members with his skills.
He greatly enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends, and he especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren.
Leo leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 55 years, Josephine Cappella Bakes, whom he married May 18, 1963; his son, Andrew (Bonnie) Bakes of Girard; his daughter, Andrea (Tom) Beil of Liberty Township; three grandchildren, twins, Brandon and Melanie Bakes, and Caitlin Beil (fiancé David Kalman); a sister, Joann Chagnot of Youngstown; and two brothers-in-law, Sam and Thomas DelGenio.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 15, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 222 S. State St., Girard.
Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, at the funeral home and will continue with a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St., Girard.
Private entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown.
Leo’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to Emmanuel Community Center, or to St. Rose Church.
