MINERAL RIDGE – Julia M. Sherlock, 99, formerly of Girard, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, May 30, 2017, at Vista at The Ridge, following a long and fulfilling life.

Julia was born Jan. 28, 1918, in Girard, a daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Machinga Strah, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1936 graduate of Girard High School, and then dedicated most of her adult life to raising and caring for her family. Julia later worked for the City of Girard in the water department, and then at the former Girard Federal Savings & Loan Company, where she retired as assistant secretary.

Julia was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Rose Church in Girard. She was also a member of the Girard Senior Citizens, Girard Women’s Literary Club, and SNPJ Lodge No. 643.

Mrs. Sherlock loved to play cards and travel. She enjoyed the many bus trips she took throughout her life, but her greatest joy was the time she spent with her family and friends.

Julia leaves many nieces and nephews to cherish her memory, including a special niece and caregiver, Carol Nalley of McDonald. She will be truly and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her husband, John Sherlock, whom she married Nov. 26, 1942, passed away Sept. 28, 1989. Two sons, John and James Sherlock; two sisters, Ann Gunther and Margaret Bowker; two brothers, Anthony and Edward Strah; and a half-sister, Mildred Ries, also preceded Julia in death.

Family and friends may gather from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, June 2, at St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main Street, Girard, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at Girard Union Cemetery, where Julia will be laid to rest next to her husband.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 222 S. State St., Girard.

Julia’s family would like to thank the staff of Vista at The Ridge, along with the staff of Southern Care Hospice, for the kindness shown and care given to Julia during her time under their care.
