AUSTINTOWN - John Winkle, 82, passed away Wednesday morning, Aug. 1, 2018, at Briarfield Manor following a brief illness.
John was born Dec. 15, 1935, in Youngstown, a son of the late Frank and Juel Ference Winkle, and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Winkle was a graduate of Chaney High School and worked as an auto mechanic and for McKay Machine. He retired from Wean United as a machine assembler.
He was a member of Christ Church Presbyterian in Youngstown, and was a fraternal member of the Saxon Club. John liked woodworking, home projects, and making cabinets, and he loved fixing things for himself and to help others. He loved spending time with his family and he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s activities and plays, and attending their many and varied sporting events, including gymnastics, soccer, track meets, and softball and baseball games.
John’s beloved wife of 58 years, Elaine Heden Winkle, whom he married June 1, 1955, passed away Dec. 1, 2013.
Mr. Winkle leaves his son, John P. (Natalie) Winkle of Austintown; his daughter, Gail (Bill) Stevens of Canfield; four grandchildren, Desiree (Bill) Adams, Derek (Abby) Winkle, and Matthew and Lindsay Stevens; a great-grandson, Bennett Adams; and a sister, Cecilia “Winnie” Lewis of Boardman.
Besides his wife, two sisters, Mary Marshall and Naomi, are deceased.
Family and friend are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life from 3 to 4 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 6, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a Memorial Service will follow at 4 p.m.
Committal services will take place at a later date at Brunstetter Cemetery in Austintown, where John will be laid to rest with his wife.
Memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512.
