Helen Barbato Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN - Helen M. Barbato, 92, of the city’s west side, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, Jan. 19, 2019, at Hospice House after a long and fulfilling life.

Helen was born Aug. 29, 1926, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Radovich Patek, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a graduate of South High School and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker who also worked outside the home as a clerk and office manager with Forum Health and for Western & Southern Insurance.

Mrs. Barbato was a member of St. Brendan Church in Youngstown, where she belonged to the Altar & Rosary Society. Helen was also a member of the senior citizens group of St. Dominic Church.

She leaves two sons, Joseph (Anne Marie) Barbato of Struthers and William (Olivia) Barbato of Niles; a daughter, Helene (Edward) Tyrrell of Youngstown; two grandsons, Steven and Christopher Tyrrell; a brother, Donald Patek of Youngstown; and two “fur babies,” Buster and Kalie.

Helen’s husband of 68 years, Stephen J. “Steve” Barbato, whom she married Nov. 26, 1949, passed away March 30, 2018. A son, Michael Barbato, passed away in 2011. Two brothers, Robert and John Patek, and a sister Mary Lou Amatore, are also deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7  p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin Thursday, Jan. 24, at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, and will continue at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Ave., Youngstown.

Committal services will follow the Mass, and will be at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where Mrs. Barbato will be laid to rest next to her husband.

Helen’s family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff at Omni Manor Assisted Living, to Dr. Greg Zinni and his staff, to Elizabeth Zinni, and to Helen’s caregivers, Kathy, Maryann, Mary, Diane, Carol, and Mae, for the kindness shown and care given to Helen and her family.

Memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s name to St. Brendan Church Memorial Fund; or to Hospice of the Valley.
