AUSTINTOWN - Helen L. Balog, 94, formerly of Boardman, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Feb. 1, 2019, at Briarfield Manor after a long and fulfilling life.
Helen was born March 26, 1924, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Fedorshin Toman, and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a graduate of The Rayen School and worked for Geordan’s Confectionary Store in downtown Youngstown and for F.W. Woolworth’s on Belmont Avenue. Helen then married and devoted the remainder of her life to raising and caring for her family.
Mrs. Balog was a member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown.
She enjoyed reading, and she loved to travel, especially to Hawaii and Mexico. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, and Helen will always be remembered for her delicious kolachi and awesome apple pie.
She leaves three daughters, Carol Anderson of Chicago, Donna (Stuart) Novotny of Austintown, and Nancy (Michael) Pirko of Poland; six grandchildren, Stuart Jr., Susan, Sharon, Sheryl, Gerald, and Stephanie; eight great-grandchildren, Brandon, Natalie, Nathan, Emily, Joshua, Laura, Noah, and Jessica; a great-great-grandchild, Mason; and a brother, William Toman of Youngstown.
Helen’s husband of 56 years, Louis E. Balog, whom she married Feb. 12, 1946, passed away Nov. 8, 2002. A sister, Marion Pierko, and four brothers, John, Joseph, Frank, and Bob Toman, are also deceased.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6.
Committal services will follow the funeral home services, and will be at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where Mrs. Balog will be laid to rest next to her husband.
Helen’s family would like to thank the staff and management with Briarfield Manor, and to Dr. Michael Devine and Dr. Michael Cicchillo, for the kindness shown and care given to Helen and her family.
