BOARDMAN - Gertrude M. Grecko, 84, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 30, 2018, at Beeghly Oaks in Boardman following a brief illness.
Gertrude was born Nov. 12, 1934, in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Andrew P. and Mary M. Troyan Grecko, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a 1953 graduate of East High School.
“Gertie,” as she was known to many, worked for years for Metal Carbides and for Republic Steel / LTV / WCI, from where she retired. After her retirement, she worked part-time for Sam’s Club and for J.C. Penney.
Gertie was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church in Youngstown, where she served on the committee for the annual parish picnic. She also was a Eucharistic Minister, was a member of the finance committee, the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, and the Altar & Rosary Society of the church.
Outside her church, Gertie belonged to the Saxon Club, was a part of the Mahoning Valley Slovak Fest at the Canfield Fair, and she worked the polls on election days. A caretaker of her family, Gertrude spent many selfless years taking care of her mentally-challenged brother, Andrew, and her cousin, Elizabeth.
Gertrude leaves her sister, Cecelia Dutko of Boardman; a brother, Adrian (Elizabeth) Grecko of Boardman; three nieces, Patricia A. (Gerald) McCann, Nancy R. Dutko, and Jennifer (David) Quinlan; four nephews, Charles E. (Carol) Dutko, Joseph M. Dutko, Robert J. Dutko, and Matthew G. (Donna) Grecko; 10 great-nieces and great-nephews; and eight great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Her brother, Andrew, and an infant sister, Patricia, preceded Gertie in death.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.
Services will begin at 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the funeral home, and will continue with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church in Youngstown.
Committal services will follow the Mass, and will be at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
