Dr. Matthew Siman

YOUNGSTOWN - Dr. Matthew Siman, 91, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, May 27, 2017, in Streetsboro, after being blessed with a successful career and a long, fulfilling life.

Matthew was born April 11, 1926, in Youngstown, a son of the late Matej and Julia Ann Maletsky Siman, and was always proud to call Youngstown his home. 

He was a 1944 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. After graduation he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, and in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge in 1952.

Upon his safe return home, Matt earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Youngstown University. He furthered his education at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, earning his masters degree in engineering in 1956, and subsequently earned his doctorate degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1969.

Dr. Siman dedicated his life to teaching and was part of the faculty at Youngstown State University for 36 years, retiring as professor and chairman-emeritus in 1992.

He was a member of Nativity of Christ Orthodox Church, a member and past-president of the Eastern Orthodox Mens Society, and a member of many professional organizations.

His beloved wife, Alexandria "Sanka" Shumiloff Siman, whom he married May 27, 1960, passed away Nov. 8, 2011. Two sisters, Anne Siman and infant Julie Ann Siman, also preceded him in death.

Dr. Siman is survived by two nephews, Alex (Patty) Shumiloff of Streetsboro and Michael Shumiloff of Colorado; and a great-nephew and a great-niece, Matthew and Jennifer Shumiloff.

Family and friends may gather from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, June 3, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a funeral service will take place at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
