YOUNGSTOWN - Donald D. Roberts Sr., 77, passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 21, 2019, at The Woodlands at AustinWoods after a lengthy illness.
Donald was born July 23, 1941, in Youngstown, a son of the late Anthony and Elizabeth Montwori Roberts.
He was a 1960 graduate of South High School, and then enlisted in the United States Army, where he served proudly. After his honorable discharge from the service, he returned home to Youngstown, where he met and married his wife, Joann.
Don worked for Commercial Motor Freight for three years, then worked for 30 years at the General Motors Lordstown Plant, retiring in 1999.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Youngstown, and he enjoyed attending services and volunteering at the Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted on South Belle Vista Avenue, near his home.
Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting pocket watches, and watching old western movies. His main joy and love in life was spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed large Italian meals which his wife often prepared, and most recently he loved spending time just enjoying his grandchildren, who knew him as “Pa.”
Don leaves his wife of 52 years, Joann Cellio Roberts, whom he married April 2, 1966; his son, Donald D. Jr. (Christina) Roberts of Columbus; his daughter, Gina Marie (Kenneth) Sheller of Girard; five grandchildren, Jacob, Jared, Ava, Anthony, and Avery; and two brothers, James (Marge) Roberts of Austintown and Ronald (Elisa) Roberts of Columbus.
His sister, Betty Jean Sabatino, is deceased.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where funeral services will take place at 7 p.m.
