Charles M. Smith

GIRARD - Charles M. Smith, 98, passed away Sunday afternoon, June 3, 2018, at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland, following a brief illness.

Charles was born Nov. 9, 1919, in Hubbard, a son of the late David and Viola Schott Smith, and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a graduate of Girard High School and worked for Copperweld Steel as a machine operator for 23 years, retiring in 1983.

Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Mr. Smith was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Girard. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans organization in Warren.

Charles thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent with his family, and his greatest joy in life was his great-grandchildren, Christopher and Corinne.

His wife of 63 years, Edith McGuire Smith, passed away Aug. 17, 2005. The couple was united in Girard on Feb. 21, 1942, by Rev. Philip J. Sinner.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory a son, Donald (Patricia) Smith of Howland; a granddaughter, Heather (Brian) McCrimmon; two step-granddaughters, Christine (Dennis) Andrews and Brenda (Chris) Parise; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Corinne McCrimmon; three step-great-grandchildren, Lauren, Dominic, and Ali Parise; and a sister, Edna Fritz of Vienna.

Besides his wife, a son, Charles P. Smith, and two sisters, Dorothy Griffith and Helen Phillips, preceded Charles in death.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 6, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 222 S. State St., in Girard.

Family and friends may also gather from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 78 E. Liberty St., Girard, where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m.

Interment with military honors will follow at Girard Union Cemetery, where Charles will be laid to rest next to his wife.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Smith’s family suggests memorial contributions be made in Charles’ name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512.
