John Poponyak Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN - John Poponyak, 97, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, March 19, 2024, at Briarfield Place in Boardman.

John was born September 26, 1926, in Youngstown, a son of the late George and Anna Groski Poponyak and was a lifelong area resident. 

He was a 1945 graduate of Chaney High School, and went to work for Truscon, a division of Republic Steel Corporation, for over 40 years before he retired. 

During the Korean War, Mr. Poponyak served with pride as a merchant marine. His service was a testament to his dedication to his country.

John was a devout member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown and was also affiliated with the Catholic War Veterans John J. Buckley Post 1292 in Youngstown.

Outside of his professional and military commitments, John found joy in playing golf, often enjoying a good round with friends and family.

John is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Michael and William Poponyak, and his sisters, Mary Booth, Anne Poponyak, and Helen Roman.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a committal service with military honors which will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2024, at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, 128 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown. 

Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.

John's family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Robin and the dedicated staff at Park Vista for their unwavering kindness and exceptional care provided to John during his 17 years in assisted living. Their compassion and support have been invaluable throughout his journey.

Additionally, the family extends a special thank you to the staff of Briarfield Place for their attentive care and support during John's recent stay. Their dedication and professionalism provided comfort and solace during his final days.
