Stanley L. Barber
June 25, 1939 ~ November 29, 2015 (age 76) 76 Years OldLIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Stanley L. “Stan” Barber, 76, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 29, 2015, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren following a brief illness.
Stanley was born June 25, 1939, in Youngstown, a son of the late Thomas E. and Frances Cordova Barber, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a graduate of East High School, and later attended Youngstown State University, where he earned a degree in accounting.
Stan co-owned and operated Barber’s Hand Car Wash on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, with his brother, Eugene, until just recently. He was also a trainer of thoroughbred race horses at Thistledown Race Track near Cleveland, and at Waterford Park/Mountaineer Gaming Resort in West Virginia for many years.
A racehorse enthusiast, he raised and cared for horses most of his life. Stan also held many horseracing positions including steward and paddock judge at Thistledown, and he was a member of the Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association.
Stanley enjoyed watching sports and playing cards with his best friend Steve, and he will always be remembered as living a very full and exciting life.
He leaves his wife, Darca J. Propp Barber, whom he married Oct. 6, 1982; a son, Ryan C. Barber of Philadelphia; a daughter, Melissa J. (Jack) White of Liberty Township; five grandchildren, Ryan Jr., Blaine, Allana, Evan, and Avah; and two brothers, Eugene (Mary) Barber of Canfield and Harry (Debbie) Barber of Austintown.
A brother, Thomas A. Barber Sr., and a sister, Donna Barber, preceded him in death.
Family and friends may call from noon to 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where funeral services will follow at 2 p.m.
