YOUNGSTOWN - Mary Scurti, 87, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 2, 2017, at Hospice House following a courageous three-year battle with colon cancer.

Mary was born Sept. 4, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Simon and Mary Kuzma, and lived most of her life in this area.

Mary was a 1947 graduate of Chaney High School, and attended Youngstown State University and the University of Tampa. She worked as a teller at the First National Bank of Tampa and for Union National Bank in this area. She also worked in the food service department at the Youngstown Board of Education.

In her younger years, Mary had various modeling jobs in the area. She enjoyed bowling and belonged to several area leagues. She also enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, playing cards, and dancing, and she loved going to The Elms, the Idora Park Ballroom, and at the Yankee Lake Ballroom to dance. More recently, Mary belonged to several poker clubs, and she loved playing cards with her friends. She also volunteered her time to help others, and she especially enjoyed volunteering at the St. Vincent DePaul kitchen.

The most important thing in Mary’s life was being with her children and family, who were her greatest joy, and she loved having family dinners at her home every Sunday. She was a kind, humorous, and compassionate person, and had many friends with whom she liked to spend time.

She was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Holy Name of Jesus Church in Youngstown, where she volunteered as a greeter and a donations collector.

Mary leaves five children, Gary (Debra) Scurti, Sandra (Glenn) Anderson, Laura (Timothy) Mulligan, Ronald Scurti, and Patrick (Tara) Scurti; four grandchildren, Heather (Brian), Michael and Matthew Scurti, and Kaylee Rodgers; five great-grandchildren, Kayley, Justin, Leah, Bryan, and Marissa; and two great-great-grandchildren, Amelia, and Noah.

Mary will be truly and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A sister, Eleanor D. Bryer, and her former husband, Henry Scurti, preceded her in death.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 North Meridian Road, Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, at the funeral home, and will continue at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Holy Name of Jesus Church , 613 N. Lakeview Ave., Youngstown.

Committal services will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
