Joyce Lee Gunter

AUSTINTOWN - Joyce Lee Gunter, 74, went home to be with the Lord late Friday morning, Oct. 13, 2017, at her home.

Joyce was born Aug. 29, 1943, in Bluefield, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Thomas and Jessie Nunn Johnson. She moved to Ohio in 1959, and came to the Youngstown area in 1988.

Mrs. Gunter was a wife, mother, and homemaker who dedicated her whole life to raising and caring for her family. Joyce loved her family dearly, and was a loving mom.

She was a member of Praise Cathedral Church of God, and of the Lioness Club in Austintown. She was a social butterfly who never met a stranger, and was a friend to all. Joyce loved garage sales, so much so that she was known by her family as the “garage sale queen.” 

Joyce leaves her husband of 54 years, Melvin R. Gunter, whom she married Jan. 12, 1963; three children, John (Kim) Gunter of Warren, Tammy (Randy) Garrett of New Wilmington, Pa., and Sherri Gunter of Austintown; five grandchildren, Samantha (Scott) Goodwin, J.J. (Chelsea) Cargnel, Nicholas Garrett, Lucas Garrett, and Brandon Dietz; a great-grandson, Rowan Cargnel; a sister, Shirley (June) Sink of Nemours, W.Va.; a brother, Jack (Brenda) Johnson of North Ridgeville; many extended family members; and many friends.

A sister, Frances Evans, and five brothers, Gene, Haskell, Mack, George, and Donald Johnson, are deceased.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd. in Youngstown, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the funeral home, where a celebration of Joyce’s life will take place at 10:30 a.m.

Interment will follow at Brunstetter Cemetery in Austintown.
