AUSTINTOWN - John Onesko, 89, passed away Friday afternoon, May 19, 2017, at Meridian Arms Living Center, following an extended illness.

John, who was known to all as “Johnny” or “Uncle Johnny,” was born July 7, 1927, in Youngstown, a son of the late Andrew and Mary Sylchak Onesko, and was a lifelong resident of Youngstown’s west side.

Mr. Onesko attended Chaney High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Japan.

He retired from the U.S. Steel McDonald Works, when the mill closed.

In his younger days, Johnny loved going to the horse races at the then Waterford Park in West Virginia. He will always be remembered by his family and friends for his great sense of humor and his generous heart.

Johnny was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Youngstown.

He leaves his niece, Dr. Dinah Fedyna (Joe Novicky) of Austintown; his great-niece, Natalia Novicky; and his special friend and caregiver, Dodie Norris.

A brother, Frank Onesko, and two sisters, Catherine Onesko and Ann Fedyna, are deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 6:30 p.m., today, Sunday, May 21, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Family and friends may also call from 9 to 10 a.m., Monday, May 22, at Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, where funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery in Youngstown.

Mr. Onesko’s family thanks Dr. Ronald Scott and Dr. Abhineet Kumar; caregivers Danielle, Jane, Lamby, Lucy, Eva, and Cierra; and the staff of Meridian Arms Assisted Living, for the kindness shown and care given to John and his family during his illness.

Memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1025 North Belle Vista Avenue, Youngstown.
