Helen M. Berdy

VIENNA - Helen M. Berdy, 94, formerly of Youngstown, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, March 20, 2017, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., following a long and fulfilling life.

Helen was July 29, 1922, in Sharon, Pa., a daughter of the late George J. and Maria Slavkovsky Gancarcik, and came to Youngstown in 1947.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who dedicated her adult life to raising and caring for her family.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown, where she enjoyed volunteering for the parish’s pyrohy fundraiser.

Mrs. Berdy’s husband of 64 years, John P. Berdy, whom she married Aug. 20, 1947, passed away Aug. 26, 2011.
        
Helen leaves four daughters, Betty (Al) Smail of New Harmony, Utah, Kathy (Bob) Hartenstein of Fort Wayne, JoAnn (Bob) Berry of Vienna, and Nancy (Fred) Raia of Santa Clara, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Tracy, Matt, Heath, Jeremy, Danielle, Daniel, and Breanna; and 11 great-grandchildren, Landon, Robert, Charlotte, Selah, Elliana, Eva, Eden, Paxton, Lily, Hanah, and Davey.

Besides her husband, three brothers, Joseph, Paul, and George Gancarcik, preceded Helen in death.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 24, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a prayer service will take place at 4:30 p.m. Family and friends may also call from 10 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 25, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will begin Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, and will continue at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, 526 W. Rayen Ave. in Youngstown.

Interment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where Helen will be laid to rest next to her husband.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Helen’s name.
