YOUNGSTOWN - Eugene Patrick Celio Sr., 92, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, Oct. 13, 2016, surrounded by his family after a long illness.

Eugene was born Nov. 15, 1923, in Youngstown, a son of the late Francesco Panfila and Adelina Anna DiPiero Cellio, and was a lifelong area resident.

He enlisted in the Army, where he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was awarded a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, and several additional military decorations.

He was a boilermaker at US Steel for 39 years.

Eugene was an accomplished bowler and an avid gardener. Many of his westside neighbors were grateful recipients of Eugene’s heritage tomatoes and peppers.

He was a member of St. Brendan Church in Youngstown.

Eugene leaves his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth Fiumara Celio, whom he married May 7, 1947; two sons, Frank Celio of Delaware, Ohio and Eugene P. Jr. (Mary Beth) Celio of Youngstown; nine grandchildren, Elisa, Danny, Dominic, Matthew, Tony, Bernadette, Marcus, Bridget, and Nicholas; and six great-grandchildren, Liam, Isis, Nicola, Eleanor, Arwen, and Julian.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Amelia Cellio, Viola Cellio, Hilda Cellio Gardner, and Neva Cellio Hyrowski, and by three brothers, Albert Cellio, Arthur Cellio, and Joseph Cellio.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home, and will continue with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Ave., Youngstown.

Committal services with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Celio’s name to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., 44512;  or to St. Brendan Church.
