YOUNGSTOWN - David L. Quinby, 89, passed away Monday afternoon, Sept. 5, 2016, at Camelot Arms Care Center in Youngstown, following a lengthy illness.

David was born May 5, 1927, in Sharon, Pa., a son of the late Dr. Julian K. and Vallie Hoffman Quinby. He was a 1945 graduate of Sharon High School, and settled in Youngstown in the late-1970s.

Dave was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as an NCO Administrative in finance and counseling during the end of World War II, and received the traditional Victory Medal.

He worked at the Westinghouse Electric plant in Sharon for 12 years, both as a bushings assembler and later in the cost accounting office, while earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Youngstown College. Mr. Quinby subsequently taught psychology classes at the Penn State Extension in Sharon for several years before becoming a psychology instructor at Youngstown State University for 29 years, retiring in 1993.

David also took graduate-level courses at the University of Colorado Denver and at San Francisco State University, and he published numerous, brief articles and reviews in little-known journals.

Mr. Quinby played serious chess in his younger days, and spent over 60 years of his life intensely reading non-fiction books. He was very impressed with the works of Deepak Chopra, and was very dedicated to his wife, Trudy.

David’s wife and soulmate, Gertrude A. “Trudy” Serenko Quinby, whom he married June 24, 1978, passed away Nov. 4, 2005. A brother, Charles S. Quinby, is also deceased.

Per David’s wishes, there were no calling hours. Private committal services took place Friday, Sept. 9, at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where David was laid to rest next to his beloved wife.

Arrangements were entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.
