Joseph Michael Rudy, 91 [Calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, 8/3/10, at the funeral home.]
YOUNGSTOWN - Joseph M. Rudy, 91, passed away Friday morning, July 30, 2010, at his home at Park Vista Retirement Community.
Joseph was born July 14, 1919 in Windber, Pa., a son of the late Andrew P. and Susan Puskar Rudy, came to Youngstown with his family as a child in 1926, and lived on Montgomery Avenue.
He was a 1938 graduate of East High School, and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and for Youngstown Sheet & Tube before enlisting in the U.S. Army during WWII. He served in the 34th Division of the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1943, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart after being wounded at Faid Pass in North Africa in February of 1943. He also received the European Theater Ribbon and several other military awards for his service to his country.
After being discharged from the service, Joe worked for Commercial Shearing and Stamping, retiring as a press operator in 1973.
Mr. Rudy enjoyed coaching Babe Ruth Baseball and Mahoning Valley Girls Softball, taking the St. Elizabeth Hospital team to the state championship playoffs. He was also an avid bowler since the early 1960s, rolled a 700 set at the age of 82, and held a 160 average in the men’s league at the Holiday Bowl in 2007 when he was 87 years old.
Joe was a member of St. Matthias Church in Youngstown, the PLAV Post No. 87, the Disabled American Veterans, and was a member of Jednota.
His beloved wife, Jane Ann Kosinski Rudy, whom he married July 31, 1943, passed away Feb. 1, 1995.
He leaves three children, Robert Sr. (Christine) Rudy of Struthers, John Andrew Sr. (Lenore) Rudy of Youngstown, and Susan (Jon) Rusch of Port Charlotte, Fla.; six grandchildren, Joseph Michael III (Monique) Rudy and Helen Marie (Stanley) Zumback, both of Middleburg, Fla., Robert Joseph Rudy Jr. of Fort Wayne, Ind., Kristopher James (Tracey) Rudy of Cape Coral, Fla., and Dana Marie Rudy and John Andrew Rudy Jr., both of Youngstown; six great-grandchildren; a brother, George Rudy of Lyndhurst; and a sister, Mary Devanko of Dundalk, Md.
Joe will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Besides his wife, Mr. Rudy was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Michael Rudy Jr., and five brothers, Michael, Stephen, John, Cyril, and Method Rudy.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug., 3, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.
Funeral services will begin on Wednesday at 11 a.m at the funeral home, and continue at 11:30 a.m. at St. Matthias Church.

YOUNGSTOWN - Mildred L. Mayer, 76, passed away peacefully Saturday night, July 24, 2010, at her home.
Mildred, who was affectionately known as "Pip", was born March 13, 1934 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late George F. and Mildred Burns Adams, and was a lifelong area resident.
She attended Chaney High School, was a homemaker, and dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family and her pet bird "Squawker".
Pip enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking and jigsaw puzzles. She was a kind and caring person who was truly loved by her family, neighbors, and many dear friends.
Mildred leaves a son, William P. (Patricia) Mayer of Youngstown; a daughter, Nancy L. (Jeff) Zatchok of Berlin Center; four grandchildren, Jacob L. Zatchok, Jeffrey L. Zatchok, Paul J. Mayer, and Jessica L. Mayer; three step-grandchildren, Jeremy Simpson, Melissa (Greg) Miller and Jamie Simpson (fiance Sean Giliberti); three step-great-grandchildren, Logan and Emily Miller, and Gabriella Simpson; a brother, George F. Jr. "Sonny" (Elaine) Adams of Youngstown; two sisters, Betty Netrick and Donna Shaw of Georgia; and many other family members, including Mary Neel of Youngstown who was raised with Mildred and her siblings.
Her husband, Paul W. Mayer, whom she married July 5, 1952, passed away March 31, 1989.

AUSTINTOWN - Helen I. Morgan, 79, of 173 North Navarre Avenue, passed away early Sunday evening, July 25, 2010, at her home following a courageous three-year battle with cancer.
Helen was born Nov. 15, 1930 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John and Alexandra Tarasevich Vallas Taran. She was raised on the east side, was a graduate of East High School, and had lived on North Garland Avenue.
Mrs. Morgan was a homemaker who dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Meander Ladies Golf League.
Her husband, Paul E. Morgan, whom she married June 10, 1950, passed away March 5, 1983.
Helen leaves a son, John R. Morgan, with whom she made her home; two daughters, Joyce S. Kuhley of Rockledge, Fla. and Kathleen A. (Michael) Adler of Liberty Township; two sisters, Julia Neill of Youngstown and Anne Hingel of Austintown; and five grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, and Alexandra Adler, John R. Morgan Jr., and Kristin E. Frazier.
Helen will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Besides her husband, Helen was preceded in death by a son, Paul M. Morgan; a granddaughter, April Lynn Morgan; two brothers, John and William Vallas; and three sisters, Mary Vallas, Vera Kutsko, and Kathryn Morgan.

AUSTINTOWN - Helen A. Elko, 86, passed away early Saturday evening, July 24, 2010, at Omni Manor in Youngstown.
Helen was born July 29, 1923 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Anthony and Stella Amieljanczyk Szmara, and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Elko was a 1942 graduate of Rayen High School, and was a homemaker who dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family.
She was a member of St. Casimir Church, its Altar & Rosary Society, and was a member of PLAV Ladies Post No. 87. Helen enjoyed baking and loved to shop, looking for bargains.
Her husband of nearly 60 years, Michael P. Elko, whom she married Aug. 4, 1945, passed away July 26, 2005.
Helen leaves four sons, Michael P. Elko Jr., John R. (Therese) Elko, James (Tracy) Elko, and Robert (Diane) Elko, all of Austintown; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Helen will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Besides her husband, Helen was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Szmara, a sister, Stella Szmara, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Elko.

YOUNGSTOWN - Mary E. Prest, 89, passed away late Wednesday evening, July 21, 2010, at Omni Manor Nursing Home.
Mary was born December 12, 1920 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth Yuraska Byers, and was a lifelong area resident.
Mary was a homemaker, and during WWII became the first female crane operator for Republic Steel. She later worked as an elevator operator for 19 years in the Realty Building in downtown Youngstown.
She was a member of St. Dominic Church in Youngstown and the Catholic War Veterans Post 1222 Ladies Auxiliary.
Her husband, Stanley Prest, whom she married Oct. 29, 1960, passed away Jan. 9, 2004.
Mary leaves her son, John (April) Prest of Youngstown; a stepson, William (Kathy) Prest of Youngstown; Stephen Byers Prest, whom she raised; two sisters, Patricia Bova of Lowellville and Madalyn Luklan of Canfield; and many other extended family members.
Besides her husband, two sisters, Irene Kotyuha and Rita Prater, and three brothers, Thomas, Andrew, and William Byers, are also deceased.

YOUNGSTOWN - Diane S. Shagla, 49, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 21, 2010, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center following a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Diane was born March 13, 1961 in Youngstown, a daughter of Nicholas Sr. and Gladys Koval Speis, and was lifelong area resident.
She was a 1979 graduate of New Wilmington Area High School and was a 1983 graduate of Westminster College, earning a bachelor’s degree in history.
Mrs. Shagla worked for the Columbus Library in the mid-1980s, and subsequently worked for the Mahoning Valley Historical Society at the Arms Museum as a library researcher during the late-1980s and early-1990s. She then became a homemaker and a devoted mother who home-schooled her children.
Diane was a member of St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown, where she was a CCD teacher.
She leaves her husband, James P. Shagla, whom she married April 21, 1990; her son, James P. Shagla Jr. at home; her daughter, Olivia N. Shagla at home; her mother, Gladys Speis of Villa Maria, Pa.; three brothers, Nick (Pam) Speis of Lowellville, Leonard (Laura) Speis of Munhall, Pa., and Eric (Marketa) Speis of New Albany; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Diane especially enjoyed the time she spent with her family and her friends. During her illness, Diane reached out to many people, both personally and on Facebook, touching many lives. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Her father, Nicholas, passed away in 2007.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Saxon Club, and enjoyed playing bingo.
Betty Lou’s husband, Ferris James West, whom she married Nov. 28, 1970, passed away Dec. 20, 1997.
Mrs. West leaves a son, Michael F. Sweda of Youngstown; two stepsons, James L. West of Youngstown and Michael A. (Debbie) West of Zebulon, North Carolina; a daughter, Paula M. Sweda, with whom she shared her home; a stepdaughter, Debra L. (Bruce) McCowin of Beaver Falls, Pa.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Evelyn (Joe) Baluck of Indianapolis, Ind. and Judith (Richard) Kosek of Struthers.

YOUNGSTOWN - Joseph J. Tkach, 72, passed away Saturday morning, July 17, 2010, at Renaissance North Healthcare Center in Warren.
Joseph was born June 25, 1938 in Youngstown, a son of the late John and Mary Lastivka Tkach.
Joe attended Chaney High School and proudly served in the U.S. Navy. During his years in the Navy, he and his brother John served two years together aboard the USS Monticello. After the Navy, Joe served with the Military Sealift Command in Vietnam aboard a helicopter repair ship, the USNS Corpus Christi Bay. From 1975 to 1980, he served in the French Foreign Legion, and then returned to the Military Sealift Command, retiring due to illness in the late 1980s.
Mr. Tkach also worked for a time for U.S. Steel, Ohio Works, and for Youngstown Sheet & Tube in Campbell.
Joe attended St. Michael Orthodox Church, was a member of the American Legion Post No. 1 in France, and was a member of the Argus Lodge F&AM in Canfield.
He leaves his brother, John Jr. (Lois) Tkach of Poland, Ohio; three sisters, Mary (Mike) Sivulich of Yonkers, N.Y., Helen Olejar of Elmwood Park, N.J., and Judith Ann (Tony) Paduchik of Tallmadge; and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, Robert I. Tkach, is deceased.

Mrs. LaFleme leaves her beloved husband, Raymond L. LaFleme, whom she married April 7, 1978; two sons, William H. (Jill) LaFleme of Warren and Brian L. (Kimberly) LaFleme of Streetsboro; a brother, Walter H. English of Berlin Center; a sister-in-law, Joy English of Austintown; a sister, Elaine (James) Beck of Austintown; and a granddaughter, Amaris LaFleme of Streetsboro.

YOUNGSTOWN - Robert H. Francis, 84, passed away Friday morning, July 16, 2010, at Hospice House.
Robert was born August 25, 1925 in Youngstown, a son of the late Harry F. and Blanche Crawford Francis, was a 1943 graduate of The Rayen School, and a lifelong area resident.
Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army with the Amphibious Engineer Regiment during World War II. Upon his return to the states, he worked as an engineering draftsman at the William B. Pollock Co., McKay Machine Co., and Wean United, retiring in November of 1982.
Bob was a member of Salem Elks Club, Elks 55 Bowling Team, Austintown Eagles Aerie No. 3298, and AARP.
He leaves his sisters-in-law, Gloria (Tom) Picino of Boardman, Josephine (Ed) Markovich of Struthers, Donna (Ron) Moran and Tina (Joe) Marzano both of Youngstown; and many nieces and nephews.
His wife, Marian Pandone Francis, whom he married in 1948, died Dec. 3, 2007. Three brothers, Glessner Francis, Harry Francis Jr., and E. E. Ellis, are also deceased.
At Bob's request, there are no services or calling hours.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.

AUSTINTOWN - Tracy Williams Hagerty, 46, unexpectedly departed from this world Saturday, July 10, 2010, at her home.
Tracy was born March 28, 1964 in Tampa, Florida, a daughter of Donald P. Sr. and Kathy Fader Williams, and came to the Youngstown area as a child.
She was a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, attended Holy Name of Jesus Church in Youngstown, and had worked for several years as a manager in the food services industry.
Tracy was a vibrant person who enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved animals and collecting many different things.
Tracy will be sadly missed by her husband, Harold "Butch" Hagerty III; her sons, Cory Harris and Tyler Leonhart; her mother, Kathy Ellis and her father, Donald P. Williams Sr.; siblings Donald P. Jr. (Anna) Williams, John D. (Gina) Williams, Christine Cavalcanti, and Crystal (Frank Jr.) Lordi; and her mother- and father-in-law, Rose and Rex Morrison.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Marie Moss.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service celebrating Tracy’s life at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 16, at Upper Room Ministries Church in Austintown.

Her husband, Frank J. Senvisky, whom she married June 1, 1945, passed away Feb. 6, 1992.
Helen leaves two sons, Kenneth F. (Carol) Senvisky of Austintown and David M. (Rose Marie) Senvisky of Austintown; a daughter, Doreen (Scott) Burin of Boardman; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She retired from General Electric in Youngstown after 28 years of service.
Mary was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and enjoyed reading and traveling.
She leaves a sister, Florence Schiffhauer of Austintown; a brother, Jack (Judy) Schiffhauer of Austintown; a brother-in-law, Joseph Matulek of Austintown; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Schiffhauer of Austintown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jessie Schrecengost and Jean Matulek, and a brother, James Schiffhauer.

Beverly, who was affectionately known as "Bea," was born May 11, 1927 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Walter and Susie Lee Houser, and was a lifelong area resident.
Bea devoted her adult life to being a homemaker and to raising and caring for her family. She enjoyed puzzles, computer games, and spending time with her family and friends.
She was a member of St. Brendan Church.
Beverly leaves two daughters, Patricia (James) Cuzic and Diane (Cloyde) Jack, and a son, James (Rachel) Razo, all of Youngstown; and two grandsons, Tobias and Joshua Hones of Holland.
Her first husband, Clarence Razo; her second husband, Walter Servenack; a son, Joseph Razo; a brother, Walter Houser, and two sisters, Pearl Kollay and Betty Lutz, preceded her in death.

Tania "Baba" Martynyszyn, 88 [Calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, 7/8/10, at the funeral home.]
BOARDMAN - Tania Martynyszyn, 88, formerly of Pasadena Avenue in Youngstown, passed away early Monday evening, July 5, 2010, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center, with her family by her side.
Tania, who was affectionately known as "Baba," was born Dec. 5, 1923 in Limna, Lviv, Ukraine, a daughter of the late Luke and Kathrine Dnistrian, and came to the United States and Youngstown in May of 1949 with her husband.
Tania was a homemaker who dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, where she was a member of the St. Anne Guild, and was a volunteer with the parish pyrohy project and the kolachi fundraiser. She was also a member of the UNA, St. John the Baptist Lodge No. 230, and enjoyed gardening, baking, and being with her family and friends.
Her husband, Michael Martynyszyn, whom she married Feb. 21, 1948, passed away April 17, 1990.
Mrs. Martynyszyn leaves a daughter, Kathy Martynyszyn of Boardman, and with whom she shared her home; a son, John Martynyszyn of Poland, Ohio; six grandchildren, Dawn Marie (Clarence) Shaffer, Christine (Nick) Kennedy, Michele Martynyszyn, Michael Martynyszyn, John Ross Martynyszyn, and Ross Kollar; three great-grandchildren, John David, Star, and Bella; a brother, Theodore, and two sisters, Anna and Katherine, all of Ukraine; and a daughter-in-law, Donna Martynyszyn of Canfield.
Tania will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Besides her husband, two infant sons, Luke and Wasyl, are deceased.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, July 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngs-town, where the St. Anne Guild will conduct a prayer service at 4:30 p.m., and a Panachida will be conducted at 4:45 p.m.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home, and continue at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, where Tania will be laid to rest next to her husband.
Mrs. Martynyszyn’s family sends special thanks to Dr. Bhatti and the surgical intensive care unit at Northside Medical Center for the kindness shown and care given to Tania.

Thomas J. Pachell, 90 [No Calling Hours. Memorial service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 7/8, at St. Christine Church.]
BOARDMAN - Thomas J. Pachell, 90, passed away Saturday morning, July 3, 2010, at Humility House in Austintown.
Thomas was born Nov. 1, 1919 in Youngstown, the son of the late James and Anna Polite Pachell, graduated from Chaney High School in 1939 and was a lifelong area resident.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a mechanical engineer for many years, retiring in 1984 from Riise Engineering in North Lima. He was a member of St. Christine Church, active with the St. Vincent DePaul Society, instrumental in forming the Father Gallagher Council of the Knight of Columbus, and was also an avid golfer.
Mr. Pachell was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed time with his family and friends.
He leaves two sons, James (Kathy) Pachell of Akron and Ronald (Jane) Kapics of Youngstown; three grandsons, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Kapics, Thomas (Sheree) Kapics and Michael (Sheila) Kapics; and six great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Collin, Dominic, Camryn, Kylie and Macey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Graziosi Pachell, to whom he was married for 53 years. A brother, Mike Pachell and a sister, Alma Crawford are also deceased.
Mr. Pachell’s family would like to thank the staff at Humility House for the kindness shown and care given to Tom during his last two months.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service at St. Christine Church, 3165 Schenley Avenue, Youngstown, on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 10 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Christine Church.

Leona M. Turner-Wack, 69 [Calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, 7/11/10, at the funeral home.]
AUSTINTOWN - Leona M. Wack, 69, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 29, 2010, at AustinWoods Nursing Center.
Leona was born Jan. 29, 1941 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Edward and Evelyn Hupp Turner, and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a 1958 graduate of North High School, was a homemaker, and worked for a time at Value City.
Leona was of the Catholic faith.
She leaves two sons, Paul Wack of Youngstown and Maj. Charles Wack, serving with the U.S. Army in Kuwait; two daughters, Evelyn Wack of Buffalo, N.Y. and Tamara Dennon of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Deborah (John) Rosa of Youngstown.
Leona will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Besides her parents, brother, Edward Turner, and a sister, Virginia Soltis, are deceased.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m.
Interment will be at Belmont Park Cemetery.

Mary Rita Lautner, 103 [No Calling Hours. Funeral services at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, 7/6, at St. Brendan Church.]
AUSTINTOWN - Mary Rita Lautner, 103, of Meridian Arms Living Center and formerly of Manchester Avenue on Youngstown’s west side, passed away Thursday morning, at Hospice House, surrounded by many of her family.
Mary was born April 23, 1907 in McAdoo, Pa., a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Bolla Hoffer, and came to Youngstown as a child with her family.
She was a homemaker, worked as a window-dresser for the former Strouss-Hirshberg Department Store, and also worked at U.S. Steel, Ohio Works during WWII.
Mary was the eldest member of St. Brendan Church, where she was a member of the church’s Altar & Rosary Society. She was a volunteer at many of the parish festivals and was a past-member of the 60-Plus Club.
Mrs. Lautner was known for her ‘green thumb’ and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and cooking. She treasured the time she spent with her family, and enjoyed the years she spent at Meridian Arms, making many new friends.
Her husband, Michael Joseph Lautner, whom she married Aug. 28, 1926, passed away Feb. 7, 1967.
Mary leaves three sons, Mitchell J. Lautner of Austintown, Charles W. (Audrey) Lautner of Youngstown, and John S. "Duke" (Betty) Lautner of Austintown; a sister, Irene Galambossy of Austintown; 11 grandchildren, including Audrey Gray, who was Mary’s care giver while she was at Meridian Arms; 25 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Mary was preceded in death by two brothers, Stephen and Charles Hoffer; four sisters, Helen Bernat, Margaret Niggel, Katherine Hay, and Julia Hoffer; a granddaughter, Bonnie Little; several infant grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Bessie Lautner.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6, at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood Avenue, Youngstown.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.
Mrs. Lautner’s family wishes to express thanks to the special and wonderful people at Meridian Arms Living Center that made her feel loved and at home during the past three years. Her family also thanks the staff at Hospice House for the peace and comfort that Mary Rita needed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, OH 44514.
